WAVES: WOMEN ADVANCING AN VISION FOR EQUALITY IN SEAFOOD

Introducing the WAVES Alliance

(Women Advancing a Vision for Equality in Seafood)

Globally, from fishing and aquaculture production to the processing, marketing, and sales of seafood products, 50% of people working in the seafood sector are women.

While women can be found in all nodes of seafood supply chains, they’re virtually absent from leadership and management discussions about the fate of our planet’s precious marine resources.

Enter the WAVES Alliance—a new effort to transcend borders and unify the various organizations from different parts of the world dedicated to empowering women in the seafood sector. Women's alliances play a crucial role in advancing gender equality and empowering women and are instrumental in advocating for policy changes, legal reforms, and societal shifts that promote gender equality.

The WAVES Alliance will help these organizations pool resources, learn from each other, amplify voices, and showcase pioneering projects that are changing the game.

By collectively raising our voices, we can push for structural change and influence decision-making at local, national, and international levels, ensuring the rights of women in seafood are respected and protected.

A steering committee is currently developing the foundational tenets of the Alliance.

Stay tuned for further information on its development and how to participate in the future.
